MATAV/CHECKFREE

In May 2004, Hungary lifted restrictions on electronically generated bills, overturning a regulation that stipulated companies could only issue paper bills and statements. In response, Matav, Hungary's leading telecommunication carrier, launched the country's first Electronic Billing and Payment Consolidation Service in February 2005. Based on CheckFree technology, the service enables customers to view, query and pay a range of bills online - seen to be a major convenience in a country where bills are typically paid via money order or postal giro.

As a bill consolidator, Matav hosts a range of telecoms, utilities, credit card and other cyclical bills from a central website -- including bills for its own fixed, wireless, cable TV and IP services, with a long-term strategy to become a Biller Service Provider (BSP) for cross-industry billers throughout Hungary. With a current volume of four million paper bills a month, Matav expects significant savings in paper and related costs by going electronic, as well as new revenue through associated services such as long-term, on-demand electronic archiving. Customers' benefits include preview and query tools for greater control over the payment process, and business support functionality for corporate payers. These include tools to access and analyse complex billing data, connect to ERP and accounting systems and provide additional types of enterprise workflow capabilities.
Peter Racsko, EBPP Project Leader and Director of Business Intelligence and Documentation Directorate at Matáv, explains: "We were determined to be the first company in Hungary to bring electronic billing and payment to market. Our implementation requirements were extremely complex -- we have to be able to accommodate a wide variety of data formats from a variety different billing systems -- both our own and those of other billing partners. We also needed to be able to support a number of different payment interfaces, including the national Hungarian banking system." In order for the project to succeed, Matav needed a technology solution that could support a wide assortment of bill types, delivering them for viewing from a single site. This called for a high degree of flexibility and the scalability to stretch to meet  Matav's future goals as a national BSP.
