Event preview - ITU Telecom World

The ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 event organiser describes what’s on offer at this years global gathering

Broadband, advanced wireless technologies, next-generation networks, these are just some of the key themes that will be explored at ITU’s forthcoming WORLD event, to be held in Hong Kong, China from 4-8 December 2006. Bringing together top names from the ICT industry and from government, WORLD will encompass a dynamic exhibition, a powerful forum, including a youth forum, and a host of social and other events and opportunities.

The digital world in which we live
‘Living the Digital World’ will be the event theme. Under this, the event will explore the technologies, companies and organisations that are driving the digital world forward. There will be chances to see numerous displays of the latest cutting-edge technologies, from wireless to IP-based communications or broadband, learn more about their applications, together with many opportunities for high-level discussion and debate on the trends that are shaping the digital world.

Top global names
ITU’s WORLD events traditionally encompass the full spectrum of the ICT industry, from the leading global names to new market entrants plus a mix of national, regional and industry pavilions. This time is no exception; the show floor will be brimming with the latest technologies, innovations, products and services and will feature the world’s top ICT names, including Microsoft, Qualcomm, LG Electronics, HP, Samsung, Toshiba, Motorola, Siemens, Lucent and Cisco amongst others.
At the heart of the show floor, attendees will find the Telecom Village, a business networking hub set amid restaurants, cafés and open squares. Alongside the show floor will be the ‘Digital Life Theatre’ – a futuristic venue with a stage dedicated to commercial presentations which will reflect the theme of the event.

Forum to tackle key industry topics
From next-generation networks and their regulation to triple play, digital content or new wireless services and more, Forum sessions will enable detailed discussion on all core growth areas. The Forum will feature many well known figures from the world of ICT, including John Chambers, CEO, Cisco Systems, Serge Tchuruk, Chairman and CEO, Alcatel, Viviane Reding, member of the European Commission, Tadashi Onodera, President, KDDI, and Kaoru Yano, President, NEC Corp. These are just some of the top-level speakers who have already confirmed their participation at the Forum. Within the central ‘Living the Digital World’ theme, the Forum will be split into three different domains: Digital Lifestyle, Digital Ecosystems and Digital Society. These will enable a thorough exploration of all facets of the Digital World.
The Forum will also incorporate a Youth Forum, bringing together university students – the future leaders of ICT – to debate and discuss key issues relating to ICT development, and a Telecommunication Development Symposium, helping boost knowledge amongst telecoms managers in developing and low income countries.
“With all the different onsite opportunities it offers, WORLD provides an unrivalled global networking platform for the industry, one where heads of industry can meet with heads of governments.” explains Fernando Lagraña, Executive Director of ITU Telecom. “At ITU Telecom we understand the crucial need – in today’s global ICT marketplace – for key players to be able to make the right connections, and our event will feature a host of ways to make this happen. We want to be sure that each and every visitor and participant at WORLD has the most productive and fulfilling time possible.”

ITU stands out
As the United Nations agency for telecommunications, ITU is different from other event organisers and is unique in its ability to attract the key names along to its events, not just from within the telecoms industry but also from government and regulators. ITU’s WORLD events are well known across the globe for their scope and breadth, and the opportunities they provide for meeting and networking.
ITU has a number of key roles, such as the management of radio frequency spectrum, the development of global telecommunications standards or helping the development of ICTs in emerging economies.
The organisation has a broad-based membership, which includes 190 Member States and over 600 Sector Members. They represent a wide range of organisations with an interest in telecommunications, including all the major players in service provision, equipment manufacturing, and network and radio infrastructure design.
As well as all these vital roles, ITU also organises the ITU Telecom events for the global telecommunications community. One of our events is held in a different region each year, with our flagship WORLD event taking place every three years. Along with WORLD events, ITU also holds a series of regional events in key regions of the world, providing the opportunity for all the leading names to come together and explore all the opportunities each region has to offer.
