Companies win Portugal LTE auction

The LTE spectrum auction in Portugal has seen winning bids placed by Portugal Telecom, Sonaecom and Vodafone Portugal.

The companies have each agreed to pay €113m for nine parts of the spectrum, and said they plan to offer mobile communication services using the latest 4G-LTE technology.

CMVM, the Portuguese telecommunications regulator, had set €113m as the minimum that must be paid.

Portugal Telecom and Sonaecom's two mobile divisions, TMN - which has been testing LTE since April - and Optimus were successful in the sale in three frequency bands.

Vodafone Portugal has agreed to pay a higher price of €146m for 123MHz (2x49MHz FDD 25MHz TDD) spectrum in the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2600M Hz bands. Like its rivals, it is planning to offer customers mobile services using 4G/LTE technology.
