Alcatel-Lucent unveils Optical Time Domain Reflectometry

Alcatel-Lucent has launched a new network monitoring solution that promises to address fibre optic-based outages.

The solution, which has been developed by Bell Labs, uses a technique called Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR).

It plugs into a network’s existing fibre access nodes and can be integrated with A-L’s Motive Network Analyzer to offer what the vendor said is a “comprehensive and continuous view” of PON networks used to deliver high-speed broadband services.

During the rollout of a network OTDR provides remote validation of the quality of fiber installation work; once live it continuously monitors all lines, pinpoints the location of network problems and reduces the need for field technicians to make multiple visits to a site.

“We can provide a comprehensive and end-to-end view of service providers’ fiber networks,” said Dave Geary, head of A-L’s wireline activities.

“By keeping the network fully operational, cash flow is maintained and new services can be introduced smoothly, which is an important benefit for any service provider. This makes for a unique value proposition.”
