The survey results includes analysis by experts at Informa, KPMG and Ovum.

As any telecoms executive is all too aware, the quantity, quality and variety of data entering operators and passing through their networks is increasing at an incredible pace, which poses some crucial challenges.

There is a cultural challenge to make Big Data a central strategy of what operators do; a business challenge to improve revenues and services; and a technological challenge to ensure data is collated, analysed and exploited effectively.

Given their position in the communications value chain, operators are uniquely positioned to benefit from Big Data, but what, specifically, are the opportunities and challenges that exist?

Appreciating what Big Data represents is particularly important as newer, nimbler OTT players appear to have stolen a march on telcos – but do operators have the right technology and people in place to collate, analyse and exploit it?

With 4G rollout upon us, social media becoming second nature and smartphone penetration increasing, it is increasingly urgent that telcos understand the importance of Big Data and put strategic plans in place to deal with it.

The survey forms the centrepiece of the special report in the Q2 2012 issue of European Communications.
