Opal Telecom signs contract with Huawei for new voice and data broadband service

Opal Telecom, one of the UK's largest network operators, and a subsidiary of The Carphone Warehouse Group, has signed an installation and support contract with Huawei Technologies, a leader in providing next generation telecommunications networks for carriers around the world.

The deal will enable Opal Telecom to build a next generation network to support the delivery of new advanced voice and broadband data services to UK customers.

According to the contract, Huawei will install, commission and provide support services for an MSAN solution across Opal Telecom's entire access network, up to 500 sites will be commissioned in the first year as part of an aggressive local loop unbundling initiative.

Huawei's high integration UA5000 MSAN and Quidway 6506R data communication products will provide integrated broadband access and form part of Opal Telecom's new core data infrastructure. The operator will leverage Huawei's MSAN's flexibility and strong capabilities together with Huawei's expertise and support to deliver new and innovative services to the market, capitalizing on new growth opportunities following changes in the local regulatory environment.

"This deal represents a significant business and market opportunity for Huawei and further demonstrates our growing position as a leading supplier of next generation network solutions in Europe," explains Edward Chen, Huawei's Managing Director for the UK & Ireland.  "This is another very strong MSAN win for us in the UK and Ireland. We are excited to be working with one of UK's fastest growing and visionary operators."

Opal Telecom chose Huawei's solution due to the advanced technical capabilities of its MSAN offering and the superior value proposition it afforded over the alternatives. With the new implementation, Opal Telecom further enhances its ability to develop compelling new services to challenge market incumbents.

Mr. Neil Mc Arthur, Opal Telecom's COO, explains: "We were looking to work with a supplier of similar culture and attitude.  We could also see that Huawei provided a competitive and innovative MSAN offering with the assurance of a very comprehensive technical and service delivery capability - an element which will be essential for the success of our rollout plan."

Opal, formed in 1995 runs a national UK voice and data network.
