Ericsson to supply Telefonica's metropolitan broadband network in Spain
Telefónica de España has selected Ericsson as supplier for its metro DWDM optical network. The new network will be a cornerstone of the next generation transport network of Telefónica in Spain.
Under the agreement Ericsson will deploy its Multihaul WDM solution to enhance the capacity of Telefónica's metropolitan transport network in Spain.
Enrique Carrascal, Network Director, Telefónica de España, said: "We have chosen Ericsson as the supplier of this technology due to its outstanding flexibility, optimal performance and operational synergies."
The new network will allow Telefónica to meet the increasing traffic demand generated by the consumer's response to its broadband services offering.
According to Ingemar Naeve, President, Ericsson Iberia, "this contract represents a major milestone in Ericsson positioning into the new transport network of Telefónica and our consolidation, after the acquisition of Marconi, as wireline suppliers".
Using Ericsson's Multihaul WDM solution, Telefónica can deliver efficient high-speed data, storage, video, and voice services with outstanding bandwidth utilization and quality of services. With its modular architecture, the multihaul solution adapts to any network needs from the edge to the core, reducing network complexity and cost of ownership.
This contract is said to highlight the benefits of the Marconi acquisition to Ericsson's customers. Both fixed and mobile operators value having a strategic partner and a provider of end-to-end solutions - including broadband access, leading-edge microwave and optical transport networks.
