Interoute and Tunisie Telecom open SDH & VoIP route to Africa
Agreement signed to link Tunisia to Europe’s largest next-generation network
Interoute, owner of Europe’s advanced next-generation voice and data network, and Tunisie Telecom have signed an agreement to provide two-way SDH connectivity and VoIP services from any location in Tunisia to any port on Interoute’s entire Next Generation network. Tunisie Telecom, the largest telecom operator in Tunisia, will deploy the service in Marseille, enabling it to provide long-tail supply from France to the whole of Tunisia.
Due to the reach and technological advancement of Interoute’s Next Generation network, this announcement has significant implications for European enterprises seeking to forge links in North Africa. The cost effectiveness of VoIP calls to and from Africa and Europe will enable high-use businesses like call centres to benefit from substantial cost-savings.
Mr. Nizar Yaiche, Executive Director Corporate Market of Tunisie Telecom stated that: “Following the investment by Dubai Holding, and because of its superior network footprint, Interoute stood out as the perfect partner to complement and strengthen our push into Europe. By combining Interoute’s Next-Generation network and pan-European expertise with our established customer base, we are able reach new markets and present innovative possibilities to our customers.”
The deal is said to another example of the close working relationship between Interoute and the family of companies under the Dubai Holding umbrella. Although Interoute’s majority shareholder is the Sandoz family Foundation, Dubai Holding invested €125milion in Interoute at the end of 2005. Dubai Holding then acquired Tunisie Telecom in the spring of 2006 for €1.89 billion.
Gareth Williams, president of global markets at Interoute commented: “We are delighted to be working with one of Africa’s premier telecoms companies as we continue to forge new links with partners in the region. The deal represents an excellent opportunity for both companies to drive into new markets and generate new revenues.”
