Viatel turns to Huawei for Next Generation optical network

Huawei Technologies, one of the world’s fastest growing telecommunications network solutions providers, has supplied Viatel with a Next Generation optical platform creating a new Pan-European network linking London, Reading, Egham, Birmingham, Coventry, Manchester and Leeds in the UK, and Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam in continental Europe.

Huawei’s Next Generation SDH technology is allowing Viatel to deliver “Carrier Class” Ethernet to their customers very effectively, thereby providing a migration path to High Speed Ethernet Services from traditional and expensive legacy networks such as SDH, ATM, Frame Relay, and giving Viatel the opportunity to pass these cost savings on to customers.

“Working with Huawei has enabled us to deliver a next generation network, using the latest technologies such as Ethernet over RPR. This has allowed us to provide a cost effective, high bandwidth migration path from expensive legacy networks such as ATM and Frame Relay,” explains Roberto Bonanzinga, SVP Marketing, Viatel.

“As the market leader in the optical products arena, we are delighted that Viatel has both confidence and trust in Huawei,” comments William Xu, EVP Huawei Technologies.

This new leading edge network is based on Huawei’s ‘OSN’ platform. The network utilises Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology and encapsulated Ethernet Over SDH (EOS) technology using Generic Framing Protocol (GFP). Viatel plans to expand this network as geographical customer demand dictates; this has already been demonstrated by the addition to this new network of a node in New York.

In a separate network application for a bespoke enterprise solution, Viatel has selected Huawei’s Metro Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) product for deployment in London.  Both networks are managed from a unified Huawei management platform located in Viatel’s management centres in Amsterdam and Egham.
