mobilkom austria and ONE team up on paybox as joint m-payment solution
mobilkom austria, the mobile subsidiary of the Telekom Austria Group, has announced the establishment of one of the first cross-operator m-payment standards worldwide jointly with ONE (the third strongest Austrian mobile operator) and the m-payment service paybox.
ONE will acquire a one sixth stake in paybox austria AG, which to date has been 100% owned by mobilkom austria. From now on paybox will be operated and further expanded by both mobile network operators. This joint m-payment platform offers considerable advantages to the customers of mobilkom austria and ONE while giving momentum to Austrian business and m-commerce.
Over 2 million contract customers of mobilkom austria and ONE will be able to use the m-commerce services of both providers, paying via mobile. Pre-paid customers, customers with company mobiles and customers of all other network operators can pay with paybox via direct debit from their bank account, as has been the case so far. For all existing paybox customers the range of possible m-payment services will broaden further on.
Hannes Ametsreiter, Chief Marketing Officer at mobilkom austria said: "As technology leader, mobilkom austria was among the first operators to get involved in m-commerce and achieved a breakthrough in m-payment solutions in cooperation with paybox. The establishment of a joint m-payment platform with ONE is a logical next step and it will further strengthen mobilkom austria’s international pioneering role in m-commerce.”
Depending on the approval time required by the European authorities for this acquisition, the first new joint offers can be expected in the second quarter of 2006. The parties have agreed on non-disclosure of the price paid.
