Telefonica to acquire O2

Spanish telecoms operator, Telefonica, is to acquire British mobile operator O2. The deal is said to be worth some £17.7bn.

O2 is the strongest operator in the UK,  and has significant numbers of other European customers in the Netherlands and Germany.

Telefonica, on the other hand, has a strong customer base in Spain and Latin America, but has fewer customers in Northern Europe.

Under the terms of the proposed deal O2 will be integrated but will retain the current branding and contract terms. The deal would also create the second biggest mobile operator in the world, after Vodafone.
