COLT extends Ethernet services with new 'off-net' capabilities

New class of service and bandwidth options also introduced to offer businesses greater network control and cost efficiencies

COLT, a leading European provider of business communications, has furthered its Ethernet services in 11 of its markets with 'off-net' connectivity. COLT now claims to offer the broadest Ethernet coverage in Europe, enabling customers to work with a single provider for all their Ethernet requirements.

In addition, COLT is the first operator to introduce on a pan-European basis, defined Classes of Service for its Switched Ethernet services to improve traffic management, as well as a greater variety of bandwidth options to more closely match customer requirements.

These latest enhancements to COLT's Ethernet portfolio are designed to meet growing demand amongst businesses for deploying simple, cost-effective Ethernet technology across both their local and wide area networks, replacing traditional data networking services such as frame, ATM and leased lines, in order to reduce costs and simplify network management.

Businesses can expect to reduce their wide area data network's total cost of ownership (TCO) by around 20 per cent with Ethernet as bandwidth can be bought in small increments, equipment costs are lower and Ethernet skills are already widespread.

Alireza Mahmoodshahi, chief technology officer, COLT said: "With the growth in email volumes and the centralisation of data, businesses require greater bandwidth, but also more flexibility, less complexity and lower costs. We believe Ethernet is the ideal solution and these new developments
demonstrate COLT's commitment to remaining at the forefront of the carrier-class' European Ethernet market. We are reducing the barriers to widespread uptake of Ethernet by offering a 'one stop' pan-European service with the sophisticated features and functionality required by today's businesses."

New off-net capabilities
With COLT's extended Ethernet coverage, customers can now come to a single provider to connect all of their sites quickly and easily.

COLT uses DSL (for branch sites) and other operators' Ethernet and SDH networks (for speeds up to 1 Gbps) to connect customers' sites that are not reached by its wholly-owned European network. It offers business-class DSL throughout UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland using either wholesale DSL or unbundled local loop.

COLT has implemented extended Ethernet service coverage with more than 40 of its established interconnect partners, focusing on those whose services are compatible with COLT's industry-leading service guarantees and levels of quality.

New features offer customers greater network control and cost efficiencies COLT has also introduced three classes of service on its Switched Ethernet services, allowing network managers to better control the traffic on their network. They can prioritise different types of traffic and manage volumes to avoid congestion.

COLT has also introduced more bandwidth options between 10Mpbs and 1 Gbps so that businesses only have to buy the amount of bandwidth that they require, thereby better managing costs.
