Three UK, the last of the country’s major operator’s to launch 4G LTE, has announced it started upgrading existing customers to its next gen service this week.
 
The mobile operator, which spent €257 million on 800 MHz spectrum at the February auction, said its rollout will “accelerate in January” so that all relevant customers could access the high-speed service by the end of the first quarter.
 
Fifty cities will be covered by 4G LTE by the end of next year and 98 percent of the population by the end of 2015, it added. Three is offering the service at no extra cost to customers.
 
“We are building a brand and network that encourages and enables customers to enjoy the mobile internet,” said Three UK CEO Dave Dyson. “Customers are using more data than ever on Three, far more than on any other network. As we add 4G capacity to the network, this experience will only get better.”
 
EE became the first UK operator to launch 4G LTE last year, while O2 and Vodafone unveiled their service on the same day this August.
 
In September, EE announced it achieved its goal of signing up one million 4G LTE customers four months sooner than planned.
 
Three UK said it has increased its total active customer base to 7.8 million - a 9.7 percent increase since Q3 2012. 
 
The operator also announced that it is extending its Feel At Home proposition to the USA, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Macau. 
 
The service allows customers to use their UK allowances to use data, text, call home and receive calls from home when abroad in certain countries. 
 
“High roaming charges stop people enjoying their phones while they’re away and Feel At Home is the antidote to that, commented Dyson.
 
“Adding the USA to the mix is great news for our customers and shows our commitment to giving them the best experience in what is a popular destination. We plan to add more countries to the mix soon.”
